European Standards Committee working on dust test

The European Standards Committee has introduced a dust test

The European Standards Committee (CEN) has accepted a draft dust test for all infill material used for synthetic turf fields. This includes stabilizing sands as well as performance infill.

The new test will be carried out according to the NF EN 15051-2+A1 standard. This is the standard for measuring the dustiness of bulk materials used in the workplace, and uses a rotating drum to determine the mass fractions of inhalable, thoriacic and alveolar dust.

The tested aggregated will be classified into four categories of re-suspension power according to the concentration measured:

  • Very low
  • Low
  • Moderate
  • High

Performance

The measurement will say something about the behavior and degradation of infill and stabilizing sand for synthetic turf over the course of time when fields are used. Dust particles can become a health issue or block the drainage holes in the backing, and, as such, affecting the drainage capacity of the surface.
