US recycling facility plans disclosed

Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, will become the site for the first synthetic turf recycling facility in the US, Danish company Re-Match has announced.

Re-Match has leased a new building of more than 11,000 sqm, where it will establish a synthetic turf recycling facility according to the same template it uses for the facilities in the Netherlands (currently under construction) and France.

According to a study by the Synthetic Turf Council, close 130.000.000m2 synthetic turf was installed in the US and Canada combined in the past 4 years. Almost half of that was installed in the Northeast of the US and Eastern Canada. Close to a third of the installations were synthetic turf fields for sports. With most sports fields having an average lifespan of 10 to 14 years, this volume alone will become available for recycling by the end of this decade.

The site in Hanover township is just north of Washington DC and only 200 km away from New York City, while Philadelphia is only approximately 120 km from the new plant.
