UK Environmental Agency declares water “of national importance”

The first six months of this year were the driest since 1976. With water reserves declining, the UK Environmental Agency (EA) is now declaring the water shortage as a matter of national importance.

The UK is currently experiencing the fourth heat wave this summer. According to Helen Wakeham of the EA, “The situation is crucial on a national level and requires the input from everybody to alleviate the pressure on water sources.”

In August, reservoirs reported 67.7% capacity, almost 20% below the usual 80.5%. The water table in almost half of all rivers is currently lower than normal. Yorkshire has even declared an irrigation stop.
