Turf technician

This city is seeking a Turf Technician to manage the maintenance of parks, sports fields, and boulevards. The role involves developing and implementing annual maintenance programs, collaborating with senior staff on daily work plans, and prioritizing tasks to meet departmental needs. Responsibilities include inspecting and coordinating turf maintenance for natural grass and artificial turf areas, ensuring turf health and playability through aeration, fertilization, top dressing, and overseeding. The position also requires collecting and reviewing turf sample results, adjusting programs, and implementing year-round best practices. The Turf Technician will plan and execute special turf-related projects, ensure the safe handling, storage, materials such as seed, fertilizer, and pesticides. The role also demands experience in operating a variety of light and heavy-duty equipment and all types of specialty turf equipment. Ensuring public and worker safety, enforcing risk management principles, and assisting with asset inventories are also key aspects of the role. Strong experience in turf management, decision-making, teamwork, and attention to safety and detail is essential.

Requirements

The ideal candidate for this position will have a Diploma in Turf Management and at least 4 years of related experience. They must be a Certified Irrigation Technician at Level I, hold a Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate or Integrated Pest Management Certificate, and possess Basic First Aid certification. The candidate will also be certified in Basic First Aid, WHMIS 2015, and Traffic Control, along with a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.

Candidates will demonstrate expertise in park operations and maintenance, including operating specialized equipment such as small tractors, chainsaws, jackhammers, compressors, tamping machines, snow blowers, weed eaters, lawnmowers, saws, and various hand tools. The role requires physical stamina for heavy manual work in varying weather conditions and knowledge of safe working procedures related to equipment and tools.

Strong organizational, communication, and safety management skills are essential as well as able to work independently or in a team, adapt to changing conditions, and handle physical work outdoors in various weather conditions. Flexibility for shift work and emergency call-outs is also required.
