Trump administration tackles synthetic turf recycling

Turf recycling

President Donald Trump’s administration has cancelled a USD 375 million federal investment for an Eastman Chemical Co. chemical recycling facility. The facility was planned for Longview, Texas and was supposed to, amongst others tasks, recycle reclaimed synthetic turf.

The money was initially approved in March 2024 by former President Joe Biden’s administration. The idea was for Eastman Chemicals to build a molecular plastic recycling plant. This funding was made available through both the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, and it was awarded via the Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations.

During a quarterly financial call with analysts on August 1, Eastman officials have reportedly said that they still see potential in Longview.

“We continue to pursue a reinstatement of our grant award from the Department of Energy,” Plastics News reported. “We have identified a range of options to significantly reduce the capital requirements both in scope and with several alternative location options.”
