The Swedish minister for sports, Jakob Forssmed, has opened a new multifunctional sports park in Stockholm that should serve as a reference park for more to come.
Sweden is currently on a drive to increase access to sport, physical activity and recreation in the country. Some EUR 23 million has been allocated per year in 2026 and 2027 to increase the number of sports halls, sports grounds and other places for physical activity.
The new centre in Stockholm features pickle-ball courts as well as basketball courts. “The surfaces for both sports have been constructed from plastic tiles. However, since both sports have different requirements in terms of slipperiness and ball bounce, we used a different finish on the tiles for the different sports,” Hans Borgers of RSI Sports pointed out.
According to Borgers, the tiles are available in different sizes can be made in any colour. They also can be finished according to specific requirements. “The printing technology we use allows us to finish the tile with a coating that will help it meet the specific requirements for a particular sport.” As both pickleball and basketball have different requirements for ball bounce, two different types of tiles were used.
