The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) has opened the window for a public consultation on the Draft Opinion on the Microplastics REACH restriction of their Socio-Economic Analyses Committee (SEAC). The window opened earlier today and will close on 1 September 2020. It is is the final opportunity for any interested party to comment on that is proposed. Together with the SEAC draft opinion, ECHA also published the final opinion by the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC). As expected, RAC is recommending a ban on the sale of polymeric infills to be implemented after a six year transitional period.
The final opinions by RAC and SEAC will be used by the European Commission in their discussions directly with the Member States to establish whether the sale of polymeric infill should be banned in an attempt to reduce environmental pollution from microplastics. The European Commission is expected to take a decision by the end of 2021 latest.
