ESTC has set up a dedicated page on its website about the maintenance of synthetic turf sports fields. The page is meant to help managers and users of synthetic turf sports fields consider which questions they should ask when choosing or using synthetic turf.
Synthetic turf is a low-maintenance surface, but certainly not maintenance-free. “Good maintenance helps extend the lifespan of an synthetic turf field and minimize problems like environmental pollution,” says ESTC chairman Stefan Diderich. He emphasizes that information from the sports field builder and carpet supplier should always be leading when deciding how a synthetic turf surface should be maintained.
“However, nowadays there are an incredible number of different synthetic turf systems available to the market. Every system is different and has its own maintenance requirements. This page has been developed to start a dialogue between owners and manufacturers and help end users to understand why maintenance is important.”
The website explicitly emphasizes the importance of preventing wear particles from synthetic turf fibers from entering the surrounding environment. Although the European authorities by no means consider this issue as serious as they once were concerned about environmental pollution from intentionally added plastics like polymer infills, ESTC believes that environmental pollution from yarn wear should be easy to prevent.
