Lawmakers in the US state of Maine will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday to discuss a bill that aims to pause the installation of synthetic turf for three years.
The state currently has 33 full-size fields.
The bill has been presented by Democratic Representative Lori Gramlich of Old Orchard Beach. It intends to block the installation or reinstallation of this type of surface at any park, but, more importantly, also at athletic fields, indoor facilities, or similar venues.
Furthermore, it intends to direct the Department of Environmental Protection to examine whether synthetic turf is a risk to public health and the environment.
Such findings and recommendations should be submitted to the legislature in November 2026.
