The recent 2025 CFP National Championship in Atlanta, the US, featured the results of a new technology where logos, lines, and numbers were tufted into the field during the manufacturing process. This limits the number of seams in a field, reduces the possible environmental pollution and increases design options. What is possible?
Historically, logos and other non-standard components in a surface like field markings were added to the field by first installing a large green surface before cutting the line or marking out and replacing it with a colourful piece of carpet. Larger logos were pieced together by cutting out every colour segment from a larger piece of tufted turf before the various pieces were fitted together like a giant puzzle and glued to a fabric that was then installed. This also made these additions the Achilles heel of the surface as it could affect the dimensional stability of the carpet or pose a health safety risk when seams would tear due to pressures exercised on the field.
