Italian companies offer old synthetic turf a new future

Versalis, RadiciGroup and Safitex have joined forces to make synthetic turf for sports fields recyclable in line with the principles of the circular economy.

The companies presented the project today at Ecomondo. The project aims at reinforcing the circularity of synthetic turf by having it recycled and processed for other applications in the sports sector. According to a press release issued by Radici this could include the production of shin guards, elbow pads and bibs.

Dutch company W&H Sports has a similar application. They have a partnership with recycling company Re-Match and Lankhorst to convert old synthetic turf into kick-boards that will keep infill inside a 3G field, or picknick tables.

In order to assess the project’s environmental performance, Versalis, RadiciGroup and Safitex carried out a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), each for its own product, quantifying the environmental impact with scientific data and calculation rules valid in all European countries in a reliable and transparent manner.
