In memory of Eddie Seaward

Eddie Seaward

Former Head Groundsman at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), Eddie Seaward MBE, has passed away.
Seaward became Head Groundsman at Wimbledon in 1990 and looked after the courts for over 20 years. During his tenure he saw the complete re-construction of the North side of the site and construction of the new No.2 and No.3 Courts. Most famously, he witnessed the installation of a retractable roof on centre Court in 2009.
The grass was always Eddie’s focus and he continuously wondered how he could improve the surfaces? By embracing change, using new cultivars of perennial ryegrass, new chemistries and new techniques he lifted the turf to another level.
Despite his important role, Eddie Seaward never sought the limelight. In true Head Groundsman fashion, he always pointed out that the quality of the courts was a team effort.
