First GreenFields field with biodegradable infill installed

GreenFields has used a biodegradable infill in its latest installation of a third-generation synthetic turf field. The new infill complies with the ISO 17556 standard for bioplastic biodegradability meaning that, should the infill end up in the surrounding areas of a field, it will be fully degraded within two years.

The infill is unique as ‘bio’ infills that are currently being offered, are bio-based infills. Bio-based infills only degrade in a controlled environment where moist, temperature and the presence of microorganism is carefully controlled.  Without these conditions in place, the infill doesn’t degrade as quickly as the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) would like to see happening. ECHA has advised the European Commission to adopt legislation that will either limit or prohibit infill dispersion from 3G synthetic turf fields to prevent environmental pollution.

GreenFill is produced by Senbis Polymer Innovations. The infill is shaped like a rugby ball to enable it delivering the required performance characteristics while also limiting the possibility for the infill to migrate. The GreenFields Slide Max ST combines the GreenFields Slide Max yarns with texturized diamond fibres. The textured diamond fibres in the pitch also contribute to keeping the infill better in place, preventing infill splash and migration.
