FIFA set to pocket millions from sale of FWC final field

FIFA is now offering a piece of the (MetLife) New York stadium  pitch for prices ranging from USD 450 to a whopping USD 3,000 a piece. The sale of the field could see the football governing body retrieving even more money than it had invested in developing the surface.

Pieces start from 17.5×17.5×17.5. As the stadium has a stitched surface, the dimensions will likely be in centimeters.

More luxurious versions of the collectable are available for prices ranging from USD 800 to USD 1,200 to USD 3,000. This Hero-edition contains a larger piece of the surface, a metal commemorative ticket, a miniature edition of the official FWC final match ball and a crystal replica of the World Cup trophy.

Only 2026 pieces will be available in each price range, allowing FIFA to still make roughly USD 13 million. By comparison, the total investment FIFA made for the trial sites at the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University was estimated to be USD 5 million.

Prices for natural turf or hybrid pitches usually don’t top the half-million price tag.

Permanently preserved

Each piece will be permanently preserved in acrylic and will come with a USB stick that will contain a certificate to validate that the grass was part of the pitch on which the 2026 FWC final was played.

FIFA said, “The acrylic features an authenticity film, while offering a sleek, contemporary display piece. Presented in a premium hinged shoulder box with striking spot UV detailing, this exclusive item is designed for collectors, fans, and football enthusiasts alike.”

The display box will be engraved with the FWC logo, name of the venue, the date and the final score.

The collectable will be sent only to an address in the US.

The field in New Jersey has been met with mixed feelings. Early in the tournament, players from Brazil and France already called the surface “difficult to play.” By the time the venue hosts the final, it will have facilitated seven games. To add insult to injury, the field will also have to endure a half-time show with dancers and performers during the final, similar to what can be witnessed during the half-time of the Superbowl. The show will, including the construction and dismantling, supposedly last for approximately 30 minutes.
