The European Commission has published Regulation 2021/1199 which limits polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in granules or mulch used as infill material in third-generation synthetic turf.
From 10 August 2022, the new limit will be 20 mg/kg of the sum of all listed PAHs. The eight PAHs are listed as category 1B carcinogens in the list in Annex VI to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Of the various infill material used, PAHs are most present in end-of-life tyres (ELT). As PAHs are a cause of concern for human health, the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) advised the EC to reduce the threshold allowed to be present in infill material.
