A court in Congo has sentenced the president of the Congo Brazzaville Football Federation (Fecofoot), Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, to life imprisonment over the diversion of USD1.3 million in FIFA development funds. Together with his wife, son, and two other officials, Mayolas was convicted of offences including money laundering, embezzlement, and forgery.
The offences are tied to FIFA grants meant for football development in Congo. In a videoclip on the FIFA website, Mayolas explains what kind of projects the CFA was busy implementing.
Last year, FIFA suspended Fecofoot for political interference when the Congolese Government dismissed Mayolas. FIFA does not allow any political interference in its (wider) organisation.
