BASF introduces new UV stabilizer formulation

Chemical company BASF and Japanse artificial turf producer Hagihara Industries have jointly developed a UV stabilizer that to protect polymers from the sun’s damaging effects.

Certain UV rays can attack polymers, compromising their strength and elongation.

The new UV stabilizer Tinuvin the companies developed, should help the fibers to last for ten years by preventing the radical reactions that can compromise polymer strength and elongation of the fibers.

While 10 years is the norm for most countries in Europe, the harsh weather in the Far East, proof this to be a challenge for fibres in this geographical area.

The additive also helps the fibres to retains its vibrant color.

“One of the challenges we faced in producing yarns for artificial grass was improving its ability to endure relentless exposure to sunlight and extreme weather conditions,” said Norio Funakoshi, Chief of Fundamental Research Section at Hagihara Industries. “As our customers were looking for enhanced durability, BASF stepped in to address this issue by recommending the ideal blend of additives,” added Funakoshi.

BASF’s range of light stabilizers are designed to convert UV rays into harmless thermal energy, serving as an umbrella to shield against the sun’s damaging effects.
