Husqvarna will launch early 2027 a kit that allows its robotic mowers to be (temporarily) converted into autonomous dew removers. The Swedish producer of autonomous mowing solutions aims to further ease the workload of groundsmen and greenkeepers and save them time.
Dew usually appears between April and October, peaking in June, July and August. If the dew is not removed from the grass within hours, fungi will have take chance to settle in. The United States Golf Association (USGA) states that there can be a reduction of up to 50% in fungi such as dollar spot if the dew is removed from the grass before sunrise.
This puts a lot of pressure on the turf team to work through the night, as dew builds up between 10.00 pm and 4.00 am. Various researchers consider dew remaining on the grass for longer than six hours to be problematic.
To ease the burden on the groundskeeping team, Husqvarna will launch a special kit in early 2027 to (temporarily) convert its robotic mowers into autonomous dew removers.
The kit consists of a brush with a mounting unit that is fitted in the same position as the central cutting head of its autonomous mower. The conversion takes just a few minutes, but it is advised to limit the number of change overs to only a few per year. Husqvarna recommends carrying out this change no more than five times per season.
According to Husqvarna, an 18-hole golf course requires four to five units to autonomously remove dew from the grass.
From later next year, the replacement brush will also be available separately.
Anyone who wishes to wait a little longer before replacing the brush but still wants to actively tackle the risk of diseases or fungi in the turf is advised to mow the grass regularly in a different pattern.
