FireRock Country Club has introduced Stadium Zoysia across its tees, fairways and green surrounds. The grass has been designed for sustainable, year-round play in desert conditions.

Water supply to the golf course in Fountain Hills near Phoenix, Arizona, was once described as the worst in the southwest of the US, making it difficult for the greenkeepers to overseed for winter rye grass. “We were following the same practices as everyone else in town trying to get the grass to grow, and we just couldn’t. We were spending all this money and wasting all this water for nothing,” General Manager Tim Geesey told Golfweek. Arizona has approximately 370 golf courses.

The golf club, which opened in 1999, closed down in 2024 for a USD 29 million transformation. Late 2025, it was opened again. During the renovation, 15 centimetres of topsoil was removed, and a new drainage system was installed before the course was finished with the Stadium Zoysia.
According to Geesey, the decision has paid off. In January this year, 4,700 rounds of golf were played, up from 4,000 from the years before. More importantly, some 150 million litres of water will be saved annually despite the golf course now being up for year-round play.
